Silent Stories is a collaborative piece. An ad was placed on Kijiji for stories of women and violence. From the responses, photographs were created to represent these stories. The artist then recorded herself telling the stories, and altered her voice to create the impression of anonymity.
The piece attempts to open up dialogue between survivors and the public about domestic violence, and to eliminate the stigma surrounding this persistent issue.
Jennifer Stewart is mesmerized by the physical presence of an image. She collects Kodak Carousel projectors and archives found and created slides. At night, her bathroom turned darkroom produces paper negatives and silver prints.
As she builds her emotional vocabulary through experimental self-portrait, she connects with others by talking about her work.
She is currently exploring film, audio, projection, installation, new media and collaboration in Ottawa-Gatineau.
